ABADDON 6 | Intro Sequence Test and Improved Environment

10/10/2024

Small Note:

A lot has been going with me with life stuff, which made it kind of difficult for me to consistently work on ABADDON. I was dealing with university (which wasn't a perfect experience, I'll be honest), working at a job, quitting that job due to health reasons, recovering from those health reasons, etc, etc. Fortunately, I have a lot more free time to get back on to the grind!

Introduction Sequence (New Game)

So, what we have here is a look at the Intro sequence when the player chooses to start a fresh new game. I wanted something that sort of sets the weirdness of the game, but without it dragging on for too long. I think I've managed to do so quite decently! There is an option to skip by pressing 'Q', but that would skip the entire sequence instead of skipping each line of dialogue. I kind of rather have it be the latter instead of the former. That way the players who are either speedrunning or are fast readers can skip through each line without the risk of missing the entire sequence for the first time players. This will be revisited in the future.

Dialogue System

A while back, I mentioned that I've been trying to learn how to make a proper dialogue mechanic. Just something to interact with the cool, wacky, weird NPC's of ABADDON. I expressed how challenging and frustrating it was to not get the results and the consistency I wanted due to my lack of experience with game programming. I've tackled this issue again some time later using a very very simple dialogue system that was modeled after the game Crypt Worlds. While it is a bit limiting, it works well for the time being. I do want the dialogue system to be more fleshed out so that the room to do more complex dialogue would be easier for me and more entertaining for the players...and also for me as well. This will also be revisited in the future.

(First Look at) Improved Environments

You may have noticed the look of the areas aren't quite what they used to be earlier this year in my last devlog. I wanted to capture some kind of feel of depth and scale with the environments that player will explore in ABADDON. While the current environments admittedly appear empty, I believe it is a step in the right direction for a lush world full of wonder. Without a doubt these areas will be revisited and decorated to give it more life in the near future.

Next Devlog???

In the next devlog, I will hopefully showcase the save and load mechanic of the game. It is still a work in progress, so it will take me a while to get it working!

Update 11/21/2024: It freaking works now and a new devlog will be in the works very soon!
